Chapter Thirty-Seven

With a new day came a calmness of character in Visla Palmarian that Kara almost found unnerving. He was still upset over her sending Sandah off with Leila, but to see him shift so radically in the span of just one night? Well, she didn’t want to think about whatever tricks her stepmother might have employed. But whatever she did, at least there was no magic seeping out of him in angry spurts.

In fact, the visla actually seemed a little bit tired. Worn out, you could even say.

She must have really done a number on him, Kara mused, instantly grossing herself out with the thought. The ball she had been making hover in front of her fell to the ground as she was distracted by the mental image.

“Karasalia, you’re not focusing,” her father said as the tenuous grip she had on her limited magic crumbled.

It was humiliating. She couldn’t even keep a simple ball afloat in the air. The Hakanan Test. A child’s spell that anyone with a modest amount of power could perform, and one that would help determine her place in the magical hierarchy when they came of age to undergo the Trials. And that was just what the visla used as her concentration exercise. Something of a touchstone he would throw in with the rest of their training to help ground his frustrated daughter.

She should have excelled at it. She should have passed the test years ago. She should have been able to keep the ball in the air and stable no matter what distractions were thrown at her. But she could not.

Yes, she knew all the spells he had taught her. She was a visla’s daughter, after all, and the words flowed from her lips as easily as they did from his. But try as she might, Kara simply did not have her father’s gifts.

Despite his rather low energy morning, the visla was apparently still harboring a bit of annoyance that he just couldn’t seem to conceal. And Kara knew that it couldn’t be about her poor magical abilities. He’d been trying to help her overcome her natural shortcomings for years. No, this was about her sending off a ship without his permission.

An overstepping of boundaries a man of his considerable power would be hard pressed to accept from anyone, even his own daughter.

“Father, are you okay?”

“Fine, Kara. Continue your practice. Again.”

She cast the spell once more, lifting the ball off the floor with relative ease this time. She focused a tendril of power, willing it to keep the ball afloat, then shifted her attention back to her father.

“Are you sure you’re all right? You seem upset still. I don’t see why you’re so angry about Sandah. He’ll be back soon enough. And besides, you’ve got other trusted captains to run errands.”

“I’m not discussing this with you,” he said, curtly.

“But, Father!” The ball dropped again.

Visla Palmarian glared at his daughter. “Dammit, Kara! The business of a visla is not to be questioned by an impulsive child! Now do as you are told.
